Slingshot – Movie

·

This was a good sci-fi flick. Casey Afflick is obviously a talented actor but I felt he was wasted here. I can’t help but be reminded of Maika Monroe in Longlegs. Both are very talented, yet throughout the entire movie, they have them completely stone-faced, showing hardly any emotions. Both in-movie characters obviously have excuses for this, with Lee Harper’s experience with Longlegs during her childhood messing her up and with John in Slingshot having always been a loner in life. I just felt it was a waste of their talent.

Slingshot was a trip. In the beginning, I was like,  Okay, this is definitely going to be another one of those “is that person really there or was it a hallucination” kind of things, along with the usual arguments, fighting and divide and conquer type of ordeal a space crew has to deal with after being put to hibernation, along with having to see and deal with only each other for such long periods of time. And….I was correct. However, I loved that ending, and it made the movie that much more worthy of watching till the end! A movie these days, I believe, can always be shorter, as my attention span just isn’t where it is compared to my younger years, and Slingshot is no exception, but not by much. The slow tension that builds between John and the rest of the other two crew members, you’d know, would eventually boil over, and you’re just waiting for it to happen. Lawrence Fishburne, Emily Beecham and Tomer Capone (Frenchie!) were equally great in their roles.

Slingshot does highlight some stupid things. For such an important mission, they didn’t think to correctly set and test the dosage of drugs used for hibernation? It’s absurd to think how they could mess this up. Also, the “amount” of crew members allowed for the mission is also ridiculously stupid. Because, you know, of how important it was for humankind, the earth, and all that good stuff. But, alas, it’s just a movie. You think you’re good at being alone, but nothing compares to being alone in space. Oh, and that ending…loved it!
