Daddy’s Head – Movie

·

Hmm….let me think for just a second. OK, yeah, this movie was slightly below average. However, it had potential to be better. Daddy’s Head is one of those horror movies that Shudder pumps out that are either hits or misses. Unfortunately, this one fell into the latter category. For my part, I am extremely glad though that Shudder is out there to fulfill a niche in the independent horror movie genre. Majority of their movies, even the bad one’s, are at least semi-enjoyable. Tubi originals on the other hand, some of them are just plain unwatchable.

Clocking in at about an hour and thirty minutes, the movie felt longer due to its slow pacing. This is yet another one of those movies that love to shoot a scene of someone sleeping for five to ten seconds before moving on. Or a scene of someone staring out the window longer than usual. While it obviously can work for some movies, Daddy’s Head ain’t one of those. As far as the story goes, it basically can be summed up as a boy and his stepmother not knowing how to deal with the grief of losing the father/husband. This puts a strain in their relationship, and things get even more weird when the boy believes that his dad hasn’t actually died and starts to see things.

Daddy's Head
Hey, look it here! Yet another horror film with a overhead forest shot in the beginning where the characters are driving through in their car!

There are a couple of creepy scenes when it shows a glimpse of the creature/entity believed to be the dad. Other than that, watchers are left in the end to once again question whether what the characters are experiencing is real or just a figment of their imagination. Is what Isaac and Laura witnessed a representation of their grief and inability to deal with each other? Or was it more of a physical thing? It does seem to me that it leans towards the latter. Everything from the barking of the dog at the mysterious entity, the way Laura’s friend got hurt when Isaac brought him to the cave, to the very ending when a grown up Isaac found some strange skeleton in the cave points to the creature being corporeal. Oh, and the very last fight scene as well. Yes, of course, all this could still point in the other direction. Neither Laura’s friend nor the child services lady acknowledged the entity in the movie. Maybe it was an alien or shape-shifter of some sort? Isaac had a thing for drawing aliens and weird creatures, and there was that scene when the entity was able to lure Isaac to the vent by pretending to be Bella, their deceased dog.

Oh, Laura, Laura. I feel the same.

There were two scenes I didn’t know what to make of. The first was the fire in the forest and Laura calling the fire department. Then there was the scene of Laura finding a car in the forest. It was briefly mentioned that her husband had died in a car accident, but that was it. Not sure how else to make of these two quick scenes and what role it played overall.
