There’s a reason why The LOX is one of the most respected hip-hop trio groups of all time. They’ve been doing it for almost three decades now. It’s obvious their stock has risen tremendously after their Verzuz battle with Dipset. It’s crazy, but if you look at their album catalog spanning the decades, they’ve only got four total albums! And yet, their Verzuz battle was filled with hits after hits. Nonstop. A lot of the songs obviously were from their solo albums along with features with other artists, but the fact that they just kept going on and on and on with hit after hit was shocking, even coming from a fan such as myself. Almost every song was a banger, and the crowd would have agreed with me. Here in episode #10, I want to highlight one such feature song they had that I so wished they would have chosen to perform during that Verzuz battle. It’s a song I think not many listeners will remember as it came out in 1998, but boy, it’s a classic. That song is called Tommy’s Theme.
The song is in collaboration with another New York hip-hop trio group, The Made Men. Their most known member, Ray Benzino, is no stranger to controversy for reasons that will take a whole article to go over. Suffice it to say, they were known to be the real deal. Their crew ran extremely deep in Boston and not to be messed with. Most famously, their crew had NBA superstar Paul Pierce stabbed. Interestingly enough, they also had a run-in with The LOX shortly after this song was out that resulted in a lot of violence backstage.
Anyway, whatever happened in the past doesn’t take away the fact that this song is a damn classic. It is featured in The Made Men’s one and only album, Classic Limited Edition (the album actually is pretty good itself despite all the hate Benzino gets) along with the Belly movie soundtrack that features Nas and DMX. The movie I remembered was actually not bad! Usually, rappers starring in movies, especially in independent ones, is a recipe for disaster, but Belly I remembered, was decently good. As far as the track goes, I think Sheek Louch absolutely destroyed it. He’s so underrated at times. Him performing his verse from Tommy’s Theme in the Verzuz battle would have been so awesome.
