Anything for Jackson – Movie

·

I’ve always had a soft spot for movies that dealt with ritualistic summonings of either Satan himself or some other sort of sacrifice where the users usually get more than they bargained for. It’s a common theme and unfortunately, I’ve seen quite a lot of low grade independent movies that dabbled in it. With Anything for Jackson, fortunately, we get a pretty fun one! Julian Richings can always play that creepy older dude in movies and I mean no disrespect when I say that. He’s balanced out by Sheila McCarthy who plays the emotional grandma. Both are forced into a desperate situation of trying to bring their grandson back to life.

At about an hour and thirty seven minutes, the movie felt like the right length. The anxiety of whether the couple will be caught or not kept the suspense going as well as once shit hit the fan in their house. It was a nice slow burn that culminated into a frantic last sequence. I think they also did a mixed job with what I’d believe to be a low budget for the movie? Some scenes like the one that featured that creepy dude with the bag over his head crawling backwards was cool along with the first scene of the police lady offing herself in the house made me jump. Oh, and that frigging lady flossing her teeth was crazy. However, some other spooky scenes were just not that good. For example, the spooky sheet ghost was very cheap. The dude/spirit or whatever that was conjured up when they first performed the ritual with the mask was also not good. Most hilarious was the spirit that dragged Ian away. Dude looked like they just picked up a random part timer working a local haunted house! 🤣 🤣

Grandma is chill AF here! I mean, who wouldn’t want tea after opening the gates of hell?!

I took the ending as a positive one for Becker? Not only did she escaped but it would seem that her unborn baby is safe as well? That part where the demonoid on the road stopped, looked at her, and continued walking into the woods leads me to believe that it no longer needs a host. However, what is lost on me is once Ian got into the picture towards the late second half of the movie. It was obvious that both Henry and Audrey were amateur summoners of the dark arts. Ian offered his services to help with the final ritual steps with the deal of being able to keep the ancient textbook along with ten thousand dollars. It missed on me on just how Jackson’s spirit from the underworld was to be summoned? With the gates of hell accidentally opened by the couple, just how was it they’d be able to summon particularly Jackson himself? I don’t believe Ian specifically mentioned that part.
