Well, this one was a waste of time. I did have some hope that it would be better than average, if only a little. However, even that glimmer of hope proved to be just a little too much. I don’t believe there was one original idea throughout the entire movie from start to finish. Nicolas Cage disappoints once again and proves to just be the meme character that he’s become. It’s another one of those parts where you could literally insert any other male lead in his place and no one would be the wiser. Fortunately, he doesn’t have a lot of screen time.

I’m just going to get this over with. End of the world? Check. Families forced to live a simple life by requiring them to scavenge and not be wasteful? Check. Monsters that only come out at night and is afraid of the light? Check. Sacrifices to be made? Check. Protective families that don’t like to share with others? Check. Bad men out of nowhere that are just assholes? Check. I mean, the list goes on. At only an hour and thirty minutes long, I felt they were doing the viewers a favor. Why couldn’t they have at least expanded, even for just a teeny tiny bit, on just how the world came to be destroyed? Maybe just a little teeny tiny bit on, you know, how the creatures came into existence? Were they aliens? Created and bred by mankind in an experiment gone wrong? Sent by the Almighty Lord to wipe the Earth clean and start over? A reverse evolution of mankind? Something, please? It obviously seemed like the girl’s family had some sort of grudge with the dad. It’s obvious they don’t want to share precious items like medicine, but there seemed to be some sort of deeper grudge between the adults, and the movie didn’t really feel like exploring any of that, nor Nicholas Cage’s character, like at all. No background or back story. Nada.
Don’t even act like it’s just me 🤣

If I really was forced to name one cool thing about this movie, then I guess it would have to be the mysterious creature’s hilariously fast snapping jaws of death. They also had a pretty creepy look during certain scenes. Speaking of which, what is up with them? They’ve obviously been terrorizing the humans for quite some time. Sounds kind of odd that all of a sudden they’ve realized that dirt is soft and that they could turn themselves into moles and attack from the ground up. Was this due to the encounter they had with the dad and the son while they were trapped in that cave? It’s hinted that they have some sort of intelligence based on the interval of knocks on the door in the beginning. It was also mentioned that the creatures rarely attack the Rose farm. Why? But alas, nothing of this was explored, so who fricking knows.
