I think by now many people have heard about the real-life shooting incident that involved Alec Baldwin on the set of this movie. It was such a sad tragedy. There apparently were more incidents throughout the filming of this movie. I’m sure many know how difficult it can be to shoot a movie from start to finish, and that’s not even including all the drama that can occur before any cameras even begin to roll. It’s apparently more sad when said movie isn’t all that good to begin with. It’s a big risk, and many times a movie can’t even recuperate enough money to break even. Anyway, I’m glad Rust was finally released. I’m not an Alec Baldwin fan by any means, though I also don’t have anything against him that I know of. Unfortunately, if the shooting incident hadn’t happened to generate the attention, I’m wondering if many people would have known about this movie? I probably wouldn’t.

At only 5.1 stars with about 2K reviews so far, it would seem like this movie tanked. After having watched it, I thought the movie deserved a bit better. It has also been some time since I saw a good ol’ western shootout movie, and while Rust certainly fits the stereotypical western drama, I wasn’t expecting the movie to be a high-paced action thriller. It would seem that many users are upset with the extremely slow pacing, but I’ve definitely watched worse offenders. At almost 2 hours and 20 minutes, though, Rust definitely could have used some slimming down.

The story was cliche but serviceable. The idea of a bounty hunter and marshal chasing a runaway fugitive is not exactly groundbreaking, but playing it safe. You’re just waiting for all men to converge at some point towards the end to have a showdown, and the question only becomes of whether the protagonist will escape or not. In Rust, it wasn’t exactly hard to figure out this answer long before it got to this point. With such an open landscape to work with, there were bound to be some beautifully captured scenes. The on-screen dynamic between Alec Baldwin and Patrick Scott McDermott is once again serviceable, and I have not much to complain about. I knew the bounty hunter, Fenton Lang, looked familiar. Turns out he’s Travis Fimmel, aka Ragnar Lothbrok in the Vikings series! It also turns out he’s starring in a new mystery TV series called Black Snow, which looks a lot more exciting than this movie.
If you’re craving for some western cowboy movie with a couple of nice scenic scenes, Rust may be able to scratch that itch, if just for a tiny bit. Its slow pacing may put many off but I personally feel the negativity from others is way overblown. If you still want a good time without having to watch the movie, then feel free to read the YouTube comments from the trailer. 😂 😂 😂
