Man, what a disappointment! While I wasn’t particularly hyped for this specific movie, I usually get excited to watch an international horror flick. I did see some posts for this on Reddit, but per usual, I tend to ignore them to avoid any spoilers. Unfortunately, what this movie boils down to is an incredibly simple story of a nun duo attempting to exorcise a demon possessing a teenager. While I think the movie was well shot, the story was hardly worth sticking around for, clocking in at a little under two hours. Worst of all, it wasn’t scary or even thought provoking at all.

I think another part of the problem with Dark Nuns is that never once throughout the entire movie did I ever, like I mean ever, feel that they were in dire trouble from trying to perform their duty of exorcising the demon. It’s reminding me that this genre desperately needs to reinvent the wheel and try something different because a possessed person being chained down to a bed while the priest or nun goes through the same ol’ exorcism ritual is just not cutting it. The Ritual, which I believe is the last exorcism movie I saw prior to Dark Nuns, was also very weak in this area.

Not much else to say here other than to save Dark Nuns in your to-watch list and only go for it when you really, really want to see an exorcism movie, just because. It’s completely forgettable, though I still have hope that if they continue with this series (I believe there was another movie that ties into this one, though it doesn’t require a watch before Dark Nuns), they change things up a bit. I might even prefer a bit more action-oriented horror movie instead of this repeated mess again.
