This was a pretty good series. It’s always fun to watch a cat and mouse game between either a serial killer/assassin and a detective or FBI agent hellbent on catching them. In the series, however, I did wish there were just a bit more “close encounters” between The Jackal and Bianca. It was still exciting nonetheless, but I think it could have been elevated to another level if certain things or events happened differently.

I mean, first of all, how can viewers not notice the awesome opening soundtrack and intro sequence? This could have come straight out of a James Bond movie or something. It was that good. I was also surprised to see a great soundtrack selection during the first couple of episodes, but unfortunately, it went away in the later half of the series. Maybe they thought it was a bit too distracting? Who knows, but I, for one, miss it.
Alright, so let’s get right to the few odd things. First off, I don’t like Bianca’s character in that she just wasn’t likable. She’s dedicated to her job and one of the end-justifies-the-means type of agents in that she will do whatever it takes to complete her mission. We see this in all types of movies/series where FBI or other special agents are involved, but for some reason, Bianca, played by Lashana Lynch, just irritated me a bit. Not sure why, though? She’s part of the good team, does what she needs to do, and is equally good at her job. She neglects her family and puts the job first, but that’s nothing we haven’t seen before. She believes she knows better than her superiors at times, but again, nothing new here we haven’t seen a hundred times over. But she was just portrayed as a not likable character to me. I guess this was needed in a way because in the real world, not many give a shit if they are likable or not as long as they get the job done when chasing the bad guys. Also, her relationship with her husband just felt odd in that he looks a lot older than Bianca. I mean, he really could pass for her dad. Him playing the role of a college professor didn’t help. 😂
Next up is the cringy plot of a billionaire who is about to release an app that will track the money flow of all the richest people in the world. Better transparency, you see. The people deserve to know. Ok, cool, but it just felt cringy that this was the plot they’ve chosen. I mean, of course, you’re going to have some ultra-rich white random and mysterious dude in the background who will want to prevent him from launching the app at all costs.
So on to the ending itself. I, for one, liked it. I had expected some type of 5-10 minute monologue between Bianca and The Jackal before their final showdown, but we get none of that. It happened so fast, and I think it actually worked out. There was no “out” being offered by either person. There was no quid pro quo. It was a deadly chase from the very beginning, and in the end, both did what they had to do to win. With that being said, I’m not sure how I feel about watching the second season, which has been confirmed. For one, I love The Jackal, as Eddie Redmayne did a good job portraying the assassin. He’s efficient at his job, calculating and manipulative when he needs to be, as well as being stone cold when the time calls for it. In addition, I’d love to see Nuria on screen again. Played by Ursula Corberó, she’s a damn beauty on the screen. On the other hand, I don’t know if I want to watch The Jackal spend time chasing back his wife and child. Also, I feel like him going after that rich white dude in the second season would somehow turn The Jackal into some type of Ethan Hunt character where he’s forced to infiltrate a securely guarded building using James Bond-type gadgets or whatever. Yeah, I’m reaching, but it’s just what I see happening.
