Down Cemetery Road – TV Series

·

Apple TV series are usually a hit for me. Back when a monthly subscription was just $4.99 a month, I hadn’t expected much from them in terms of competition with Netflix. Yes, they will obviously have some shows and movies that will knock it out of the park like Ted Lasso, but I felt those were hard to come by. Much to my surprise, Apple TV actually had TV shows and movies that were way more to my liking than any of the other subscription services. What’s the saying? Ahh yes…quality over quantity. However, it’s natural for viewers to come across shows that ultimately seem like a big failure. Down Cemetery Road, unfortunately, is one of those series.

To sum up this series after having watched the last episode, my one and only question is simple: WHY? For one, there is nothing memorable about this series. This includes the characters along with the story itself. Absolutely nothing stood out. This show really felt like some Netflix filler that you’d find in the results one day during a search for another show. You’d do the usual routine of getting curious, read the show details, look at the cast to see if there’s anyone you recognize, and give it a shot only to find out in the end that, yup, it’s definitely filler-type material and you have no idea why you stuck with it till the very end other than being OCD and really, really trying hard to not want to give up on a show once you’re past the first 2-3 episodes.

To be fair, the acting, while nothing spectacular, was okay for the most part. However, my standards can be quite low at times, especially when the show and story itself are not particularly interesting. So what do we have here? I mean the story itself I find to be completely hilarious. We have a woman who gets curious after a house explosion only to find that the little girl she thought she had met earlier in the day was not the little girl who disappeared during the incident. She starts digging only to find out she’s being stiffed by an invisible hand. She gets in touch with some private investigators, and away they go into uncovering a massive government cover-up. Once the cover-up was discovered, I rolled my eyes so hard I thought they were going to pop out. Like seriously, the author on whom this show is based couldn’t have come up with something a bit more creative than another unsanctioned government R&D into chemical weapon use and testing? Like, come on! Oh, and let’s not forget the cold-hearted and one-dimensional assassin. I mean, what’s a show like this without one or two of those?

All in all, Down Cemetery Road felt like a really massive waste of time. It had some fun parts, and I love British dry humor at times, but definitely not enough to save this show. The ending also felt extremely lackluster and not rewarding enough for having the viewers sit through almost nine hours of the show. Although the characters, like I’ve said earlier, are hardly worth remembering, I’d at least want the ending to have some sort of closure because I’ll be damned if I’m watching a season two of this. That was a dick move by Zoe to just leave Sarah to go off on her own at the train station. I can only assume she’ll no longer go back to being a private detective. As for Sarah, I have no idea. It’s like she’s right back in the beginning, minus a husband.
