Bodycam – Movie

·

This one had serious potential. The premise of watching the bodycam footage of two cops accidentally killing a man and a baby during a distress call only to find weird cult-like shit happening afterward can definitely work. I’m 100% confident that Bodycam will undoubtedly draw comparisons to episodes in the popular V/H/S horror franchise. Other than the longer length, the movie very much has that “V/H/S” feel and vibe to it. And yes, that’s a good thing in my opinion. I remember watching Siren, a movie spin-off of a V/H/S episode called Amateur Night, and loving it. Anyway, Bodycam started out great but ultimately sputtered out in the second half.

So of course satanic and demonic cults are involved. They always are. It’s easy-peasy to use it in horror stories and movies to quickly add the mysterious and horror elements. It’s also easy to use it as an excuse to not having to explain every single detail because you know, cults and shit. It’s supposed to be weird. But it works, most of the time. Bodycam did one thing right, and that was at least making it interesting enough in the beginning to make viewers not want to quit the movie entirely twenty or so minutes in. But I found the second half of the movie just sorely missing that “it” element, and that was a shame. The two cops cluelessly running around trying to get a handle on all the weird shit that was happening since the distress call accident just wasn’t fun to watch.

Cult members

There were some creepy moments with the whole homeless cult thing and I appreciated those. There was only one actual scary moment in the entire movie and I think it best for viewers to skip the trailer for this movie. I was so disappointed that it gave that scene away. It made me anticipate it that much more during the movie. And then came the whole monster/demon thing. Cheesy? Yes, 100%. I think it might have worked just a little more if they spent at least 5-10 minutes explaining some lore behind it? Does it have something to do with family ties? We suddenly see Jerome’s sister getting summoned. Is he hallucinating? It does seem that everyone else besides the two cops know about this cult/demon thing, even Jerome’s mother. Why does the demon need another baby sacrifice? How did that woman computer hacker end up in Bryce’s house tied up to the chair? The cult members? The monster thing itself? The other question is just why was Jerome targeted himself? It was Bryce that killed the child. And again, not sure why a child sacrifice was required other than because, you know, demonic cult stuff.

Anyway, Bodycam would have fit much better as an episode in the V/H/S series. What it is now I don’t see it holding too much viewers attention for the entire one hour and fifteen minutes of run time, which is short enough as it is. But as a short 20-30 minute V/H/S episode? Hell yeah.
