Can I Be An NFL Coach If I Am Able To Spike the Ball With 50 Seconds Remaining?

·

,

YOU. HAVE. GOT. TO. BE. KIDDING. After the absolute disaster and collapse of the offense, defense, and special teams of the Dallas Cowboys in the last 23 seconds just a few games ago, I really thought I wouldn’t see another boneheaded decision for some time. I mean, we are talking about coaches and players making millions of dollars. I mean, we can at least expect the head coach of a professional team on this level, let alone the entire coaching staff, to be able to realize that they no longer have any timeouts remaining and that, to win the game, ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS CALL A PLAY TO SPIKE THE BALL TO STOP THE CLOCK AND THEN KICK THE FG. Mind you, we’re NOT talking about a stressful situation in which the clock had only seconds to go. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 50 FKNNNN SECONDS TO MAKE THE DECISION. 50 FKNNN SECONDS! WHAT?! In one of the most stunning games ever, in which the New York Giants squared off against the Washington Commanders and went into OT, where it seemed like BOTH teams looked like they didn’t want to get the win, that’s EXACTLY what happened because it ended in a draw. The Commanders’ head coach and QB did something absolutely so boneheaded that it defies any explanation. THE COMMANDERS LITERALLY SNATCHED DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY.

Commanders head coach, Dan Quinn. Investigate this dude for malpractice.

I rarely agree with hardcore fans calling for a coach to get fired. For one, unlike so many hardcore fans out there, I’ve never had a professional NFL home team that I’ve rooted for from childhood to adulthood. I rarely follow any team or player’s progress or offseason updates other than getting whatever notifications a sports app gives me. Secondly, and more importantly, I just don’t give that much of a damn. I just want to watch good games each and every week. I also don’t gamble so I could give a flying shit who wins or the stats they put up. However, when fans today are calling for the head coach of the Commanders, Dan Quinn, to be fired immediately, I actually find myself agreeing. This is made more sad because, from what I’m reading, this isn’t the first time this coach has made these types of boneheaded decisions that cost his team the game in the closing minutes. Even during that Cowboys absolute disaster against the Ravens, I don’t believe I called for the firing of the coaching staff. They absolutely blundered the game away and embarrassed themselves, but it didn’t feel like someone should have been fired. What Dan Quinn did here today was absolute coaching malpractice. There are ZERO excuses, regardless of how much the QB or the coach wants to take on the blame afterwards. There is absolutely NOTHING that can correctly explain this away. With the Cowboys coaching staff, we at least saw that they were just playing scared. The head coach played scared, and their new defensive coordinator is absolutely green and had a crap defense to boot. It is what it is. But here today, I can see no way how anyone can spin this so that it makes sense.

EDIT: I just realized that this is the same head coach for the Atlanta Falcons that lost in SuperBowl 51 to the Patriots in the infamous 28-3 blown lead. This dude has to be either a nepo hire at the moment or part of some ol’ boys club because there’s just no way….No fkn way.

So, it’s overtime, and the Giants have a chance to win the game with a field goal. However, their running back fumbles the ball away. The Commanders make some great plays to go down the field with no timeouts remaining. However, on their last play, the clock is at around the 50-second mark on 2nd-and-8. At this point, they obviously aren’t going for a first down. They run the clock down, and at around the 13-second mark, they finally hike the ball. However, instead of spiking the ball, QB Jaden Daniels runs around like a chicken with its head cut off. What’s more idiotic? They actually CALL A PLAY for the WR to run down the field! WHATTT??!! Jaden gets downed with 6 seconds remaining. However, he doesn’t seem to know what is going on, doesn’t make any effort to get up, and is just looking around confused, thinking that his coach will call a timeout. The other players quickly run back to get set in what I assume will be a play call to spike the ball, stop the clock, and kick the game-winning field goal. However, the clock goes to zero, and the game results in a tie. I mean, you have got to be fucking kidding me. We then see a visibly upset Dan Quinn angrily throw his headset into the ground. Like, sure, you can spike your fucking headset, but you can’t call a play to spike the damn ball? Meanwhile, some of the Giants players are celebrating like they just won the damn Super Bowl. I mean, WTFFFF. INVESTIGATE BOTH THESE TEAMS FOR FIXING THE GAME. It’s not even funny, and I feel so damn bad for the loyal Commanders fans that have to endure this coaching and QB malpractice.

The infuriating thing is that they had a full 50 damn seconds to decide what to do. What I think should have happened and what they wanted to do is for Jaden Daniels to quickly run to the left hash mark and get downed. They would immediately get back to the line of scrimmage and spike the ball to stop the clock. He runs to the left hash mark because it’s likely the side of the field the field goal kicker prefers. They had the time and the downs to run these two plays and win the game! Here is the other perplexing thing. Why even worry about running down the clock?! It was OT and the next score wins! The coach was literally focused on the wrong thing. They were on the Giants 25 yard line. Let’s say your kicker actually misses the kick. The Giants would have the ball with however little seconds left. Jamis Winston is their QB and he made some awesome passes to Nabers throughout the game. If however you lose in this situation via a hail mary into the endzone, I mean, you deserve to actually lose. Jamies likely wouldn’t even have been able to make that throw and the game would end on a draw. But hey, at least you tried and give your kicker a chance. You can yell at him after the game is over or cut him from the team. Whatever. But to squander that opportunity itself really begs the question whether you should be a head coach of the team anymore.

I mean, did Jaden not know they had no timeouts? Did he know but fail to say or signal that to his coach? Did Dan Quinn know they had zero timeouts? Did his other coaching staff know? And if they did, was there no way to communicate this to Dan? Or did they have a way but were just too chickenshit to inform their head coach? Was Jaden scared to call this out to him? Was he scared to overrule his coach and called the actual correct play of spiking the ball? Nothing made sense. The way Jaden ran around likely also made us believe that he had no idea as well. But HOW? You have AI and all this analytics telling you the chances of success of running a play or what to do in certain situations, and it FAILS TO INFORM YOU THAT YOU HAD ZERO TIMEOUTS AND THE PLAY YOU JUST CALLED IS NOT THE RIGHT ONE? Seriously, where is the Ask Madden button when you need it?! This is so embarrassing! The only happy team at this moment is likely the Cowboys because once again, they embarrassed themselves in a prime time game home loss to the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers who started a un-drafted free agent on Thursday! The media will likely move on from shaming them to now shaming the Commanders. 🤣 🤣

A few seconds watching the press conference of Jaden is absolutely hilarious because they showed it on Redzone. This dude is young but he is praised for being mature for his age and for his poise. He literally couldn’t answer any question with any clarity and just kept saying that the loss was on him, we had to play better, have better game management all while smirking, BLAH BLAH BLAH. I mean, should I wager to say that the coach would be saying the same thing? Basically it is the same usual bullshit and rehearsed answer players and coaches give each and every week. The media always wants accountability and so the players and coaches just say whatever is needed to placate them and then its off to next week’s game. Fans will move on from this a day or two later, continue to buy merchandise, go to the next game, etc etc. Jaden and some of the other players likely are just laughing their asses off. Like they know they messed up but hey, there’s 10+ more games to play and we’re already paid. If we can move on from this, so can you fans and media. At this point I don’t even know what I’m writing anymore. This situation is just so bizarre. Can a head coach actually be benched? Because if dude is not getting fired, he definitely needs to be benched and put on the sidelines for the ultimate humiliation for all to see. That’s not asking much, is it?
