I think Dan Levy is one of those dudes where people are either going to love or hate his type of gay comedy. It’s kind of hard to find a in-between. I, for one, belong in the former camp and so I found Big Mistakes to be right up my alley. But I can also see how some viewers can be put off by it and I don’t blame them. Dan Levy just isn’t for them.

I think the best part of why I think Big Mistakes is so hilarious is the casting. Every single member was just perfect and fit the mood and energy of the series so darn well. First we have Nicky, Dan Levy himself. If you’ve seen him in Schitt’s Creek, then expect nothing less from him. He sort of really plays the same character. Then we have Morgan, played by Taylor Ortega. I mean, she was such a perfect match to pair with Nicky as the rowdy and clueless sister. Her facial expressions at times was just pure gold. Then there’s Natalie, played by Abby Quinn as the third and youngest sibling. Her facial expressions and character similarly cracked me up, and it was a shame she didn’t have more screen time. I seriously hope she will, though, in the next season. She seems to have a wild side to her, as is evident from the very last episode, and it would be hilarious if they dedicated some time to her shenanigans. Then we have their mom, Linda, played by Laurie Metcalf. She’s hilarious in that she’s one of those characters whose lines are hilarious, but she didn’t mean them to be. Not sure what kind of comedy that’s called, but again, it fits so perfectly in the dynamic of their weird family.

So the comedy. I guess if I had to give it a category, I’d likely go with chaotic or confusion comedy with a lot of shouting and arguing. Yes, that likely can put some viewers off after a while, but that’s just how it is. Growing up with a sister, I can totally relate to the dynamic between Nicky and Morgan. Speaking of confusion and chaos, that’s exactly the type of scenario we see Nicky and Morgan getting dumped into when they steal a necklace from a convenience store. Two normal people getting mixed up with gangsters and bad people is exactly the type of comedy I can see Dan Levy specializing in. I’m eagerly awaiting season two. After the ending of season one, it’s not hard to see how more chaotic scenarios can come up. I can already see Morgan actually enjoying it due to her restless nature and bored life. Nicky, I don’t see changing too much, but I’d have to imagine that he will have to once again make more hard choices and decisions that will contradict his teachings as a pastor. Bring it on!
